For people who love DC but are looking for a home away from the bustle of more central neighborhoods, Brentwood is the perfect place to settle. Once the hub of Washington social life, Brentwood is now a community with affordable housing, great places to eat and possible plans for expansion in the near future.
Boundaries and Perimeters
Brentwood is shaped like a trapezoid, bordered by Brookland, Eckington, Langdon and Ivy City. To the north it is bounded by Rhode Island Avenue, to the east Montana Avenue and to the south by New York Avenue. The Red Line metro tracks and Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor border the west. The Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood metro station services the neighborhood.
A Lavish History
Brentwood is named after the Brentwood mansion, which originally stood on Florida Avenue and 6th Street. Built by the first mayor of DC, Robert Brent, the mansion was a wedding present to his daughter, Eleanor, as she married Congressman Joseph Pearson. A beautiful, expansive white building with Roman-style pillars in the front, the Brentwood mansion was the center of Washington social life, especially under President Ulysses S. Grant. Unfortunately, the building burned down in 1917. Today, the Gallaudet University, a school of the deaf, sits on part of the old estate.
Mostly Houses and Some Apartments
The majority of housing in the Brentwood neighborhood is single-family homes or townhouses. There are a few apartment complexes, which are more affordable compared to other, more central DC neighborhoods. With potential development plans, many new houses and apartments could be added to the neighborhood in the next few years.
Food on Wheels and Mouthwatering Meats
When strolling the sidewalks of Brentwood, you may come across a mural-covered school bus parked by the side of the road with savory aromas permeating through its windows. DC Dives is a food truck devoted to bringing diners halal and kosher specials, including their hit “The Show Dogg,” consisting of smoked chicken and apple sausage wrapped in your choice of duck bacon, scrambled eggs, cheese, grilled onions, and green peppers on a potato roll. The truck offers a variety of meats, including venison and rabbit.
For a good sit-down meal, locals rave about MGM Roast Beef, located on Brentwood Road. Famous for its signature sandwiches and dessert cakes, MGM Roast Beef is styled as a 1950s classic American diner, with a new dining room recently added to accommodate the growing clientele. Open at 7 am, it also offers breakfast.
Sports & Recreation
Residents of all ages can find something to do at the Brentwood Recreation Center, located on 14th Street. The center includes a baseball diamond, basketball court, computer lab, softball field, fitness equipment and a playground. You can sign up for a variety of programs through the recreation center, such as youth flag football, junior girls softball, cheerleading and tee ball. The center also offers fun programs for seniors.
Possibility of New Development
Mid-City Financial Corporation, owner of the currently standing Brookland Manor apartment complex, has big plans for the neighborhood's future. Mid-City’s plan will demolish Brookland Manor and create eight new blocks by the Rhode Island Ave metro station, bringing in a variety of affordable housing, both for sale and for rent, in the form of multi-family homes, townhouses and senior housing. The project also will add a new grocery store to the neighborhood and a community green space. Faced with criticism saying the project is too intense for the neighborhood, Mid-City announced in April that it will scale back the plan by 20 percent.
